Important Lessons From 2023

2023 had a lot  and now is the best time to set our intentions for the forthcoming year by reflecting on our past one. To inspire your reflection period, here are some lessons 2023 has taught us so far:

1. You can (and should) buy yourself flowers.

As the number one song of 2023, Miley Cyrus’s self-love anthem reminds us that self-love involves self-care. This, however, looks different for everyone.

While Miley likes to buy herself flowers, there is a plethora of self-care practices to try in the upcoming year. From decluttering your space to building an exercise routine, find ways to care for yourself physically, emotionally, socially, and spiritually.

After all, nobody can love you better than you can.

2. Celebrate each other’s successes.

With two of the biggest concerts of the millennium premiering in the spring of 2023 (Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour and Beyonce’s Renaissance Tour), media outlets swarmed to compare the two. These two icons responded by attending one another’s concert film premieres.

While entering the new year— whether at work, school, the gym, etc.— think about how you can celebrate your peers’ successes without diminishing your own. Furthermore, consider how you may be able to take inspiration from those whose success resembles your own.

3. You are (K)enough.

The Barbie movie left us with some significant quotable (and often existential) moments, one of the internet’s favourites being Ken’s tie-dye hoodie reading I am Kenough.

It reinforces the idea that we are all inherently worthy and represents that one can find internal satisfaction without seeking adoration or validation from others.

Although it may seem silly—if you’re intimidated by the solemn nature of meditation and affirmations, repeating the mantra “I am kenough” can be a light-hearted way to build positive energy and self-esteem.

Bonus points if you say it while wearing a cute pink accessory!

4. Open up some free spaces on your 2024 Bingo card.

It’s okay to plan goals for 2024 (in fact — you totally should!) However, let 2024 be the year you learn to embrace the unexpected.

After all, the only constant in life is change — most of us couldn’t have anticipated, for example, UFOs or the Grim Reaper attending the coronation of King Charles on our 2023 Bingo cards.

2024 will be another year of fantastic, hilarious, terrible, and joyous occasions. But if this year has taught us anything, it’s that we can never know what to expect, so we might as well just enjoy the ride.
